# Configuration Workflow for Backup to S3

1. Create an *S3 replication peer*. See [Managing S3 Replication Peers](/docs-5-3/docs/en/managing-s3-replication-peers).Managing S3 Replication Peers

An S3 replication peer defines a remote AWS S3 bucket or custom S3 bucket to which data can be replicated.
2. Create a *protection policy*. See [Managing Protection Policies](/docs-5-3/docs/en/managing-protection-policies).Managing Protection Policies

In the protection policy, you must define the starting time, schedule and a local retention policy for the snapshots. You must also select the S3 replication peer that you created in the previous step.
3. Create a *protected path*. See [Managing Protected Paths](/docs-5-3/docs/en/managing-protected-paths).Managing Protected Paths

In the protected path, you must specify the data path to replicate and the protection policy you created in the previous step.
