VAST Cluster allows for live monitoring of block volumes.
By default, live monitoring is enabled for the first 1,000 volumes per tenant. If more than one tenant exists, then for all tenants combined, live monitoring is automatically enabled for the first 5,000 volumes.
Note
Default live monitoring is disabled for snapshot volumes and GSS cloned volumes.
View-level live monitoring does not affect volume metric collection. Disabling view-level monitoring stops view metrics from being collected, but volume metrics will continue to gather as long as volume live monitoring remains enabled.
After the capacity is exceeded, new volumes beyond the capacity are created with live monitoring disabled. In this case, you must manually disable live monitoring on a volume in order to manually enable live monitoring on a different volume.
To illustrate:
A cluster with only one tenant:
A cluster has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled. To enable volume 1001, one of the existing volumes must first be manually disabled.
A cluster with five tenants:
Default cluster has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant1 has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant2 has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant3 has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant4 has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant5 has 1 volume. It is automatically disabled since the 5000 volume limit across all tenants was reached.
A cluster with more than five tenants (but less than 1000 volumes per tenant):
Default cluster has 500 volumes enabled.
Tenant1 has 500 volumes enabled.
Tenant2 has 500 volumes enabled.
Tenant3 has 500 volumes enabled.
Tenant4 has 500 volumes enabled.
Tenant5 has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant6 has 1000 volumes enabled. Volume 1001 is automatically disabled.
Tenant7 has 500 volumes enabled. Volume 501 is automatically disabled because the 5000 limit across all tenants was reached.
To enable or disable live monitoring for a volume:
In VAST Web UI, right-click the volume in the Element Store -> Volumes page and select Toggle Monitoring to toggle monitoring on or off.
In VAST CLI, run the volume modify command with the --enable-live-monitoring or --disable-live-monitoring option specified.
