A VAST storage admin deploys, configures, and maintains the VAST cluster that serves data to users and applications. Day-to-day, this means provisioning storage through views and protocols (NFS, SMB, S3, and block), connecting the cluster to identity providers, enforcing capacity limits with quotas, protecting data with snapshots and replication, and keeping the cluster healthy by monitoring alarms, applying upgrades, and working with VAST Support when issues arise. You can do most tasks from the VAST Web UI, the VAST CLI, or the VMS REST API.
Common Storage Admin Tasks
Enable client protocol access: Follow the end-to-end workflow to give NFS, SMB, and S3 clients access to the cluster.
Create and manage views: Expose a path on the cluster to clients over one or more protocols.
Manage virtual IP pools: Configure the virtual IPs that clients use to reach the cluster.
Connect to Active Directory: Join the cluster to AD to authenticate and authorize users and groups.
Manage quotas: Set capacity and file-count limits on directories, users, and groups.
Schedule snapshots: Create protection policies and protected paths for point-in-time recovery.
Configure async replication: Replicate data to a remote cluster for disaster recovery.
Monitor alarms and events: Review, acknowledge, and resolve cluster alarms.
Upgrade your VAST cluster: Plan and run a non-disruptive software upgrade.
Send a support bundle: Collect diagnostic logs and send them to VAST Support.
